The FBReader on the DR1000S is exactly the latest Linux Desktop version, which is very similar to the Windows and (unofficial) Mac versions. See FBReader for Desktop downloads (DR1000S downloads are from FBReader Release for the DR1000S). You can check your ebooks for FBReader compatibility on a PC before the DR1000S arrives.

I'm not sure what else you can do ahead of your DR1000S arriving. The built in Java MobiPocket Reader is similar to what you can run under Windows, but the "Java" part implies some limitations. You may want to buy a commercial MOBI dictionary and any dictionary known to work on the iLiad (or the DR1000S obviously) is ok, but a few don't work on the Java reader. Any DRMed MOBIs you buy now will have to be redownloaded with your DR1000S PID once it arrives, but this is routine.
