Yes, you can download the audiobook to your hard drive. Alternately, you can stream the audiobook, without downloading it.
If you stream a book, you will need to use one program, whose name that I've forgotten (the reason is that I couldn't get it to work and, after about 20-25 minutes of trying to fix it, the Audible tech person gave up; I uninstalled it). The program that you will need to use to listen to the audiobooks, if you download them, is called "AudibleManager." You can download one or both of the programs from Audible--free, of course. IMHO, it is much more convenient to just stream the audiobooks, when you can.
The audiobooks are ours forever (technically and legally, we don't really
own them, but I won't get into that). If we download them, no one can take them away from us (that is unless Jeffrey (Bezos) wants, and can find a way, to hack into our computers in the future and take them away. haha). I am cautious by nature, and while there probably never will be an issue if I don't download them, I feel like I should go ahead and actually download them to my hard drive to be absolutely sure that I will have them "for keeps" (I feel the same way about my ebooks).
As far as getting the audiobooks on to your own device(s) is concerned, I can't really help you there. Other Mobilereaders will be glad to help you, and the archives are a great source of information.
