Pretty sure they're looking for the security code for your default credit card. I "bought" a couple free books and that's what they needed (just one time).
Interesting that you can now put ebooks in your shopping cart. You can turn on "instant purchase", but then it really is immediate -- no confirmation step like they used to have. Since B&N CS probably wouldn't do a refund, I turned that back off right away to help prevent mistakes. The shopping cart is a bit of a pain (especially if it's only one book), but better safe than sorry.
ETA: The new website seems like a huge disruption for no improvement that I can see. I'm wondering if someone will be able to write a new Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey script.
