All you have to do to prevent over-the-air software updates is to put a dummy file (or it may perhaps be a folder) with the same name as the update file in the root of the Voyage's drive. Ask in the Dev Corner for details.
Seriously, though, it generally takes weeks or even months for Amazon to send out OTA updates after they release the update for manual installation, so you have lots of time to decide whether or not you want it.
There is no good reason not to register a Kindle, and lots of good reasons to register it.
