Some of the uk delivery companies just plain suck and in a situation like yours they'll just pass the buck and tell you to take it up with the supplier.
The better ones will help out as much as possible but it all depends on the company and who you get on the end of the phone.
The best you'll get is an apology from Amazon and maybe a voucher or the delivery charge refunded. It's always worth complaining however since if they get enough complaints they'll switch to a different company.
