I think exactly how bad it is depends on when the last full refresh was done. The more pages since it was done, the worse the leftovers. But, I have to admit I have read so few books with footnotes, I don't notice it. And, as an alternative to paging back and forth, tap the screen to bring up the menu and then tap it again to close the menu. That's basically a double-tap. A full refresh will be done when the menu is closed.
