Except.... I have a user defined field called "Genre", which works just fine on CC, but every time I try to select it to add books I get the message that "Unfortunately, CC has stopped" and I'm returned to the main list of categories.

Any chance that this happens only after a search, either long-press or "standard"? I can repeat that but I can't repeat any other crash.
