Even when you think calibre isn't doing anything, it may, for example, be dealing with a backlog of metadata.opf files that need to be written after a bulk job of several sorts. And calibre keeps a file lock on the metadata.db, ,which could lead to quarrels between it and other programs.

i.e. why risk it for no good reason?
