I just use them for books. If I was ever to buy a Kobo reader I'd get it from either John Lewis or Argos, and just expect a standard one-year warranty, as provided by Kobo.
I've previously chatted to WH Smith when considering the Kobo Aura and discovered they would only accept returns/exchange if the item was faulty because they had to go through Kobo. Which is one of the reasons I opted for the Paperwhite (surprised you think Amazon's customer support is anything like as hit and miss as Kobo's seems to be). I wouldn't rule out getting a Kobo reader in future, but I'd buy online from anywhere other than Kobo directly.
