The copy of the database to the PC should work. When something like that doesn't work, it usually means either there isn't any space, or you don't have permission to write to the destination. If either of these were the cause, it would mean you have bigger problems with your PC than the ereader. If you are copying to the Windows desktop, that isn't a good idea. It is better to put data files somewhere else. The documents folder or another folder would be best.

Having said that, as this is a new device, I wouldn't worry about backing up the database first. The symptoms suggest the database is corrupt. That will prevent new books added to the device from being loaded. The simplest fix is to do a sign out on the device. The device will remove the database, restart and prompt you to set up again. It should then load the books.

If that doesn't work, do a factory reset. The option for this is on the "Device information" page of the settings. That will wipe the device completely, reinstall the factory firmware and then take you through the setup again. This fixes just about any problem, but it does mean you have to load the books again.
