I don't know whether Amazon will release more updates for the PW1, however, on the plus side, you could jailbreak your PW1, install KOReader and read ePubs and PDF files on your PW1 or you could install a font hack, if you don't like the default fonts. If you're interested in hyphenation, there's a
Calibre plugin for that that doesn't require a jailbreak.
(Voyage and PW3 owners can no longer install jailbreaks without hardware modifications.)

The "new typsetting features" wouldn't make much of a difference, since the new Bookerly font actually looks worse on the PW2/PW1 than the default Caecilia font.
