to "rescue " your books wirelessly, as a backup.
method 1>install es file explorer from app store , copy the books from device folder(s) to your PC public documents folder using that app. you go to LAN, find your PC, supply and needed log in credentials....
method 2. create a dropbox account, if you don't already have one. that same es file explorer can link to dropbox, look under cloud any supply credentials. now copy the books folders to dropbox, [ it is possible to sideload the dropbox app and do it that way, but that is awkward with no USB. [ when I want to sideload an app I begin by placing it in dropbox..... catch 22 ]
i think the "empty view" in windows may have an answer in amazon community forums, if amazon phone support cannot help. as always
google is your friend and it suggests that you are not alone with this one.
once you have tour backup, proceed with trying other cables, other ports , other devices if you have to go it alone. a new cable from ebay is very cheap and it may be as simple as spending 99p
PS GIYF. i search google on this string of keywords and get pages of relevant hits:
kindle fire usb windows empty
google searched do not need to be grammatical, just hit it with the keywords & see what it finds
in the above search the 1st result goes to amazon forum and the first 2 suggestions therein look worthwhile

the mention that maybe some app such as battery management is interfering with windows view is exactly the sort of tip that you and your neighbourhood techie could never stumble across... could power of community forums is the way to go
