NON_FICTION
"The Days of the French Revolution" by Christopher Hibbert (350 pages) is a decent chronology of the events.
"When the King Took Flight" by Timothy Tacket (290 pages) covers the revolution up to the execution of Louis XVI
There's also "Citizens: A Chronicle of the French Revolution" by Simon Schama, but that may be a bit long (950 pages) viz. your requirement of 500 pages or less.
FICTION
"A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens
"The Scarlet Pimpernel" by Baroness Orczy
