Here is the full story.
I purchased a Kindle Wireless Reading Device in May 2011 and, from the start, choose to download to computer / transfert via USB using Calibre as an e-book management tool for all my titles (mostly from Amazon Kindle but with quite a few from other sources).
This worked perfectly but, since February 2015, my old unit started to act up : freezing up / resetting itself several times a day. Repeated inquiries to Kindle support service could not offer any real option except getting a replacement device.
I got a Kindle Fire HD 7 on 06-Jun-15 and planned to transfert my more than 2,000 e-book titles to this new unit (hoping to also retain the annotations / highlights I had created but I was told this would not be possible).
I finally had to buy the Calibre Companion app for my HD 7 to get my on-computer Calibre program to be able to send titles from my desktop to my new unit. A good number of these Wireless assigned titles transferred without an hitch but several others when called up on my Fire HD produced this DRM-related error message : "Invalid Item. This item is protected with DRM and cannot be read on your Fire. Please remove the item from your device and download it again or purchase a copy from the Kindle store."
Since I use Calibre as my main e-book catalogue, I would like keep on using it rather than rebuilding everything from scratch.
Does this give you a complete picture ? Any question or suggestion ?
