Some might be able to hold the paperwhite with one hand and still change pages, I cannot. Those are facts. My hands are my hands and yours are yours. What happens in my case is I lose grip on the device and it slips. Moving the thumb over breaks the balanced grip I have on it. Cover or no cover, makes no difference. I end up with such a strained grip trying to hold on, my wrist hurts to bad after a few minutes it takes me out of the story. Add to that the constant joint going back and forth.
I read my Voyage now without a cover. At night I put the cover back on. I can read it with one hand very easy with no cover. No stress on the thumb, no stress on my wrists and I don't lose grip. With the cover its a tad heavier so I prefer sitting it on the chest or sideways in bed. I can hold it with one hand in the cover and change pages, but I prefer the lighter non covered Voyage for that. I have one of the lightest covers around for it by the way, a Fintie. Which I use because its so easy to get the Voyage in and out of it.
I was able to read my K1, K3, basic all with one hand because of the buttons. I could never read my PW one handed because of lack of buttons. So its an easy decision for me.
