1) Read in paged mode, not scroll mode (click the scroll butto in the top right corner)
2) This will happen if the book you are reading does not have well defined footnotes, then the viewer has to guess what is part of the footnote and what isn't. Since the book you are reading has both complex footnotes and has failed to mark them up properly, you are out of luck.
