Many thanks for the idea, chaley, but unfortunately it has hasn't helped. It deleted 9.4GB of Windows Update files (you were right - running "Disk Cleanup" as administrator did make the option appear), but after having done so, I still got a 1 minute lock-up when Calibre started.
