Just a theory, but I think this is less about shipping times or cost and more about warehouse staffing. By having longer to process your order (and with slo-mo shipping Amazon sometimes waits 3-5 days before putting my stuff in a box) they may not need to add to their staffing to accommodate more orders, or at least more rush delivery orders. Not sure but this made sense to me when I considered it.

The main reason I joined Prime was to not have to put together $25 (now $35) orders to qualify for free shipping. Since delivery time was secondary to me this is a great perk.
