It's because they messed up the kerning of the word in the ligature example -- it was laughably bad and immediately caught my attention.
Ligatures are used in most high quality print books. You've seen them your entire life, but may have never realized it.

They work best when the rest of the kerning is also done right, and done well you hardly notice them, yet they make the text much more readable.
