So in answer to the question "does anyone intend ..."
The answer is yes, we have been there and done that, several years ago (twobob and I).

If the required kernel modules for the device/firmware version of interest are not already built and tested, build an updated version - the scripts we used and other documentation are in the same public repository as the modules we built.

insmod required modules, configure, have a nice day.
