I believe that problem has long been fixed (since early 2014), though I don't think the LED's changed in any way (they just figured out how to filter out the fringing effect). However I would avoid refurbished models. I got one last October (I think it was $50 less than new model) and it had blue fringe. I returned it for a refund.
Also, we're coming up on the 2 year anniversary of its launch. I have to think there will be a new HDX7 this fall, and it will surely have a rear facing camera (useful for capturing print documents if nothing else) and probably better specs overall.
