I actually find that decision to be quite curious. Microsoft's rational for removing DVD playback is probably quite sound. Shipping it by default means increased licensing fees. It is probably prohibitively expensive to develop an add-on that will be purchased by a limited number of people. On the other hand, a media player that supports a limited number of formats is hardly desirable. It forces users to focus upon what software they need to get a task done rather than on performing the task at hand.
