Kobo Original

Hi

I hope that someone can assist. I have the original Kobo with Wifi Model N289. I wasn't using it for the longest time, as I was using my IPAD.

The last software version which I still have in KOBO desktop is 1.9.11 (6/1/2013)

This past week, I loaded some books from caliber onto it, but sporadically it wouldn't recognize the SD card. When I attempted to sync the purchased books from Kobo, Kobo desktop did not acknowledge the device at all. Then the reader started freezing and cycling through processed content, without making any changes. Then caliber wouldn't communicate with it. - error communicating with device message.

I called KOBO and they indicated to do a factory reset...what a mistake that was. They didn't tell me, until after it wiped the 1000 books on it, that you can't do a factory reset if the software hasn't been updated. They didn't tell me that each firmware update has to be done in sequence. If you miss one, Kobo will no longer update the software. And Kobo won't let you go back and get a missing firmware update so that you can do them sequentially.

Now I have an ereader with no books on it, I can't update the software. Essentially it's a paperweight. It's no longer under warranty and they won't assist me further.

I've searched through the various forums, copied the 1.9.11 update that I had on my PC onto the reader using windows explorer, as suggested in one of the posts, but even then nothing happened.

I tried copying epub directly using windows explorer. I can see them in windows explorer, but not on the ereader when you turn it back on.

File Directory looks like this:

KOBOeReader:
+Upgrade - includes files Koboroot.tgz, Manifest.md5sum
subfolder m166e

Even if I can't download new books to it, from Kobo site, I would still like to use it as an offline reader while I am travelling. Any suggestions / help would be greatly appreciated.

Very frustrated ereader user.
