I like giving the width of tables as images in em's so it scales with the font size. (Just remember max-width:100%)
As far as I can make out, Amazon KF8 does not permit zooming of SVG images Akward for big tables as images.
My personal preference for side notes is to put them on the right hand side, to avoid ugliness when the sidenote comes close to a new paragraph/text indent. I also put a frame around them or give them a gray background. Then I can shrink the whitespace around the sidenote, and it is still distinguishable from the surrounding text.
