use the right tool for the job. e.g. ES file explorer (free) can access any video file you place in a shared folder on a local PC, and you can make that a favourite view for easy access. In fact you can also then "play" the video without copying it across first, ES will open it in your preferred video player app ( e.g. VLC, MX video player) and stream it for you.

if you want to be more sophisticated, get the plex app and set a plex media server on your pc with access to your video files. that way you get pretty shelves, 7 metadata to browse through, so long as you stick to plex naming convention it can find all the relevant background info/ metadata for movies and tv shows

so for books, use calibre on PC + calibre content server + CC + reader apps
for video or music the equivalent is plex media server on PC + plex app, or simple PC file share (over LAN) ES file explorer + video player app.

paid for plex pass has many more bells and whistles to explorer.
