KF8, which stands for Kindle Format 8, is the latest Kindle format that Amazon uses for all AZW3 files. KF8/AZW3 files may contain embedded fonts; books in the older KF7/MOBI format don't. Both formats support cover images.

Calibre will generate a cover image from an ePub file, if it contains a cover page or a cover image. However, Calibre, won't actually add the cover image (or implement other metadata changes) until you transfer the book to your Kindle or select the Save to disk option.

If you're getting MOBI files instead of AZW3 files, select Preferences > Behavior and change the preferred output format to AZW3. If you don't like embedded fonts, install the
Modify ePub plugin and select Remove embedded fonts.
Also download the
Quality Check plugin and select the Fix ASIN for Kindle Fire option. (For more details, see
