The basic idea of idea of using a photo to visualize a character has been around for ages. Back in the day it was pretty common to use illustrations clipped from magazines (or even mail order catalogs). No reason you couldn't scan some in for your own use.

I'm not a lawyer either, but I agree with Hitch that the (purely personal) use you've described shouldn't be a problem.
