A factory reset "with the power button and pressing the side of the case"? Huh? There are no buttons or sensors in the sides to do that.

from the Kobo Help folks:
"Before attempting these steps, please ensure your Kobo Glo HD has been charged for a minimum of three (3) hours and then try powering it off and on.

Try a simple reboot of the device:
1. Hold down the power button for eight seconds and release it.
2. Press the power button once more firmly to reboot the device."
That is how to force the device off and then on again. But, you would normally only use it if the device was not responding. A shorter push will do a clean shutdown which is preferable.
