Compact discs came out back in 1982 (I was fortunate enough to be in Japan at the time and got a Sony CDP 101 when they came out) but took a couple years to supplant vinyl. The original MP3.com began selling single downloads by 1997.
In the interim they did have those little four inch Compact Disks that you usually put in a ring adapter. I think I may have bought "Doctorin' the Tardis" on one of those when I was in Saudi Arabia.

Plus, they attempted cassettes singles that didn't really succeed. I remember the mini CDs and the player I had had a small well that would fit the mini CD (the reverse of the 45 adapter on turntables.
According to the article on vinyl on Wikipedia, CDs started to outsells vinyl records in the late 1980s. I waited for about 3 years before buying my first CD player, when the price of the players and CDs, and the selection of titles had reached a point where it made sense to try out the new format.
Returning to the thread topic, "Good Eats" just re-ran an episode featuring how to properly grill a chicken. It showed how to avoid the problems when grilling a chicken (such as choosing the proper shape for grilling [flat and consistent]).
