Maeterlinck, Maurice: The Massacre of the Innocents, v.1 22 December 2008.

Maurice Maeterlinck (1862–1949)
The Massacre of the Innocents (1886)
Translated (1916) by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos (1865–1921)

This short story was Maeterlinck’s first published work. (He went on to win the Nobel prize for literature in 1911.) It is inspired by Pieter Bruegel’s painting, “The Massacre of the Innocents” and is (unfortunately) as relevant today as ever.
