It's more like the ebook market has abandoned them.

From the latest author earnings report:

Barnes & Noble’s Nook store’s well-covered collapse appears to be accelerating. It is now possible to hit the overall Top 50 Best Seller list on Nook.com with fewer than 100 sales per day from a standing start. It takes around 1,500 sales per day to hit the same benchmark on Amazon.com. We currently calculate B&N’s ebook market to be in the single digits, perhaps even the low single digits.
I suspect dropping the non-mobile apps and the backup ability on top of their BPH friendly policies came back to bite them.

At one time they actually listed indie romance titles 100 slots lower than their sales warranted to make sure they didn't show up on the first page of the listings.

With indies making up half the indie market they were effectively sending fans of those authors (many of which were selling reverted ex-Harlequin titles) to Amazon.

Some day maybe we'll see a HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL study of WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???!!
