This discussion reminds me of a humorous piece which circulated around Usenet listservs in the late 1990s: "B.O.O.K. (TM): Built-in Orderly Organized Knowledge Device."

The B.O.O.K. was touted as a technological breakthrough with amazing features such as the storage capacity of a CD-ROM, special Opaque Paper Technology which allowed both sides of a paper sheet to be used (thereby doubling the information density), and complete portability with no crashes or reboots needed.

It was harder to find than I expected, but it's reproduced here (with a nice historical footnote):

Cartier, Marielle. "Built-in Orderly Organized Knowledge Device." Abbey Newsletter, vol. 21, no. 8 (1997).

I've just revealed my geezerness by mentioning this, so I'll head back to my rocking chair for a little nap.
