There is no reason you can't have and use both on your Kobo device.
Have you tried using the "Poweroff" function of KSM7, when shutting down for the night?

I don't normally power off and on the device every day. I'm thinking of trying to exit Koreader and enter Nickel and then into sleep mode before I sleep. I hope it solve the problem
