Hmm, in that case I am out of ideas, the only thing suspicous in the debug log is output from KDE's KIO subsytem, which should not be getting involved at all, when using the NON_NATIVE file dialog.

You can always workaround it by adding book susing the command line

calibredb add "path_to_book_file"
