IF the piece just snaps out, if anything then doesn't work I should be able to just snap it back in place. It all depends on how it's put together. The regular Glo doesn't have any extra piece there, just the gap, but I suppose it's possible that it does perform a different distribution of the IR beams in the Glo HD.

Reading out in the sun today, when I tilted my Glo HD it looked like running LED lights going up and down the sides. And maybe it was just where the sun was at the time I tried, but really bright glares came off that shiny piece. I could find a way to adjust it to minimize it, but really you shouldn't have to do that. You should be comfortable reading no matter what position.
