I'll 2nd this comment. VIRTUALLY ALL manufacturers are using this same e-ink tech and it all has the thin substrate. IMHO flexing/bending of the device is the big killer of screens (even ones people keep in cases).
Sorry about your luck with your screen, but this is not specifically a Kobo failing.
