I have a Paperwhite 1 (and a Paperwhite 2) and a Voyage. I prefer the Voyage screen to the Paperwhite 1's screen, mostly because the light is more even, but it's a very small preference.
As far as the light shining in your eyes there's no difference. They both work in exactly the same way with the light pointing down at the screen from the light transferring coating on top. The screen and bezel being flush makes it a little bit nicer to use but it has no other effect. Really the reason I got the Voyage has more to do with it's reduced size and weight than anything to do with the screen.
