To answer your first question, no, definitely not. If anything happens to that computer your backup dies along with your live library.

Best practice when it comes to backing up any data you care about is not only to put it on a different device, but in a different geographical location entirely. Anyone who has ever had a flood, tornado, or house fire, can tell you why...

Cloud storage is your friend here. Only drawback with that is that you will trust your data/collection to servers hosted by someone else, but that's only a big deal for people who wear tinfoil hats or people who don't like paying for their entertainment media

About cloud backup, by the way, don't stare yourself blind at dropbox just because they have a deal with certain e-reader companies. There are lot of other services out there, that give you a lot more space to play with, for the same generous fee of nothing, if you search a little. Take your pick.
