That is overkill.
I've run into covers that were over 7 MB in size on an ebook that was really only 400 KB. And I fully agree with you, it's ridiculous overkill that does nothing but bloat the size of the book for no reason. I mean how much time do you spend staring at the cover to justify the wasted space.

Even maps included can be compressed correctly to still appear at great quality without getting into the overkill sizes that bloat the book. But it seems whoever does the images for ebooks knows nothing about image compression.
