Changed the SSID to one without special characters (there had been underscores) and got a connection after about 5 failed tries, so that could be called an improvement.
My wifi router is using channel 1. Still not sure if the reader is set up with any channel or if it just tries to connect with whatever the router is using.
Anyway there is no competition showing up; mine is the only SSID around.
And still no response to Check for Updates.
