Judging by your screenshots are you comparing with the frontlight on? I don't think the light is a part of either the pearl or carta display technologies. I compare my eReader Pro+ to a kobo touch and can notice a very tiny difference between the two with similar font setting.
A little worrying that it could be a T62 instead of the newest device.
