I don't understand the either/or. I use my Kindles for 99% of my reading but when I'm caught waiting somewhere and don't have a Kindle with me, I read my current book on my phone. I was shocked that I could read on the smaller screen but I can. I wouldn't want to read an entire book on a backlit screen but in an emergency it beats reading labels on boxes.
I would not give up my Kindle to use my Nexus 5 for reading and I can't imagine getting a tablet.
