The main driver for Kobo's is included in the calibre release. There is no need to install the extended driver or the Utilities plugin.
You could configure calibre to use the connect to folder option to interface with Kobo but you would not get all the integration between the two.
Frankly the Kobo environment is a lot more open than the Apple environment; I don't forsee the same issues as have occurred with the IOS interface.
