There is no reason to feel bad, you did nothing wrong.
Just like anywhere, MobileRead has a certain percentage of people who are overly critical of others.

Anyway, back on topic. Have you given the Find Duplicates plugin a try? It is more or less designed for your exact situation -- although it does not work automatically.
