I can confirm the Safe method works of dropping the update file into the Kindle whilst in USB Mode as per above.

The confusion came partically as the retailer labelled both PaperWhites as 2013 models and I didn't check the serial numbers off the list. Plus the tech at Amazon failed to spot my mistake.
