Typically, m, n, and o are used to set the spacing in a font --- one can add in e as well. The idea is to set the sidebearings so that minimal kerning / post-adjustment is needed so that the font works well in apps w/o kerning or when it's turned off.

Thus, even when kerning is active, m,n,o are set using their natural sidebearings.

FWIW, having a lot of kerning pairs to me is a warning sign that the font was poorly spaced.
