Thank you everybody for your answers. I was mostly using Gentium Plus as an example of a font that doesn't have all the required styles/faces. Yes, Gentium Basic comes in all of them but has a limited coverage of languages compared to Gentium Plus.

It seems, based on GeoffR's reply, that if I want to read both epubs and kepubs I should stick with fonts that have all four styles available.
