The Girl Who Wouldn't Die by Manchester-native Cambridge-educated author Marnie Riches is the 1st in her Georgina McKenzie series of crime/suspense thrillers starring the eponymous student criminologist, this installment set at the University of Amsterdam and pitting her against a bomber with a deeper plot with a mysterious part for Our Heroine™, free courtesy of publisher HarperCollins' Maze imprint.
This is being compared to Scandi-noir authors Steig Larsson and Jo Nesbø in the blurb (and you can in fact read a
blogpost by Riches about she was particularly inspired by Nesbø in the writing of her book), and has a favourable quote from Barry Forshaw, an academic specializing in studying Nordic noir crime thrillers, some of whose books regarding which I happen to own and find a useful guide to the field (couponable at Kobo, incidentally).
Currently free @
B&N UK,
Amazon UK,
iTunes UK, and
Kobo (available to the UK, but seems decidedly un-free when I check other regional iTunes & Amazon stores which often also get the UK freebies, even Ireland this time around). Probably also free at Google Play UK, which I can't easily check from Canada.
Unlikely to cross the pond, this doesn't even seem to exist in a North American edition, and we've a pretty low transmigration rate for HarperCollins UK freebies anyway.
And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.
Because even if the storyline seems kind of standard and nearly-clichéd trope-y for this subsubgenre, at least it has a mildly unusual-for-English-fiction setting and an academically-oriented heroine and a bit of praise for the author from a specialist source that I more-or-less trust, so hopefully it works out okay.
Enjoy!
