Even that would not be able to replace the touchscreen entirely, like ... fine control for book selection? the confirmation dialog when you want to connect USB? If that already doesn't work you'd have to remove the internal SD card (if the touch has any) just to install a mod...
If the touch screen can not be fixed, it might be time for a new reader.
