Great! Thanks for that -
1. makes a lot of sense.
2. with so many versions of C++ installed one just doesn't know. Thanks.
3. not worth an 'active' wait then!!! Worth knowing.
So - did a complete cleanout (VERY carefully - didn't want to damage 0.7.4!) and reinstalled 0.8.6 from a fresh d/l.
Some improvement in that ctrl+V now works when importing from .txt files and the like, and, within the file, ctrl+V throws up the 'plain text' message - but still works!
But while playing I found and d/l'd microsoft's Dependency Walker which analyzes what .dlls. etc. are working when the file opens. Now, I definitely d/l'd the 64bit version, but when it opens I get a message saying it (0.8.6) is trying to work off two CPUs: it shows up as much of the program still operating off x86, but about a quarter of it off AMD64. Odd that.
Never mind -
having bored all but the most intense to death -I'll shut up and thank all again for the explanations and what can and can't be done.
